ABOUT THE COURSE:

Tendinopathies of the hip and pelvis represent a large burden on both the sporting and ageing populations. Growing evidence is shaping contemporary conservative management of tendinopathy. This course provides participants with guidance towards a deeper understanding of tendinopathies of the hip and pelvis, and more effective clinical management. The information presented is based on both an emerging evidence base derived from scientific studies on structure and mechanobiological mechanisms, risk factors, impairments and the available information on effects of intervention, and over 25 years of clinical experience.

The course includes an online theoretical component, and a one day practical component.

AIM OF THE COURSE:

  1. Bring together the available information on tendinopathies of the hip and pelvis with a particular focus on pathoaetiological mechanisms.

  2. Provide a clinical interpretation of the scientific data with direction and practical ideas for management.

  3. Highlight areas where research is deficient for those interested in adding to our evidence base for contemporary clinical practice in this field.

  4. Teach practical skills involved in assessment & management of tendinopathies of the hip & pelvis.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:

  1. 􏰀 Describe basic tendon structure, and biological mechanisms occurring in both a homeostatic state and in a pathological tendon

  2. 􏰀 Describe anatomical relationships, impairments, and postural and loading habits that may predispose to the development of each of the tendinopathies addressed - Gluteal tendinopathy, proximal hamstring tendinopathy, iliopsoas tendinopathy & adductor tendinopath

  3. Assess appropriately using specific diagnostic tests, and tests of etiological mechanism

  4. Develop maximally effective intervention programmes including both load management and exercise prescription

ONLINE THEORY (3-3.5h) :

The Online Component involves 3-3.5 hours of lectures over 6 lessons dealing with the in depth anatomy, pathology, and pathomechanics thought to be involved with gluteal tendinopathy, proximal hamstring tendinopathy, iliopsoas tendinopathy, and adductor longus tendinopathy and adductor related groin pain. - They are presented as powerpoint lectures with slides, audio, and printable notes.

  • You may stop, rewind and play as many times as you like.

  • Access will be granted for 3 months from the time of enrolment.

  • There is also an online forum for discussion.

PRACTICAL SESSIONS (7h CPD)

Registration 7.45 - 8.00 AM

AM SESSION (8.00- 12.15PM)

  • assessment techniques (diagnostic tests, and tests related to forming a hypothesis regarding each individual’s aetiological mechanisms)

LUNCH (12.15-1.15PM)

PM SESSION (1.15- 4.30PM)

  • management techniques (appropriate control of loading, posture and movement retraining and development of an exercise programme)

Note:

  • Please bring shorts to the course for the practical sessions.
  • Online access to the theoretical component of the course will be provided in advance.
  • Handbook will be provided on the day.
  • Tea/Coffee and refreshment will be provided, but please bring your own lunch.

Tutor:

Dr Alison Grimaldi PhD, MPhty(Sports), BPhty

Alison completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland in 1990, a Masters of Sports Physiotherapy in 1997, and her Doctorate in Philosophy in the Field of Physiotherapy (PhD) in 2008. Her PhD studies were concerned with improving our understanding of hip muscle function and the relationship with hip joint pathology and weightbearing stimulus. These studies involved research collaboration with the European Space Agency.

Alison continues to be passionate about extending our understanding of why we develop problems around the hip and pelvis, and what we can do to most effectively prevent and manage these problems. She is currently involved with research studies through the University of Queensland and University of Melbourne, co-supervises a number of PhD students, and has pioneered the use of Real Time Ultrasound technology for the assessment and retraining of muscle function around the hip & pelvis. Due to her voluntary contributions to research at the University of Queensland, Alison has been awarded the title Adjunct Research Fellow in the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences.

It is one of Alison’s core beliefs that research should be relevant to clinical practice and helping the patients we treat every day, and that physiotherapists in the community should have access to this valuable information to allow them to transfer this knowledge into clinical practice as quickly as possible. To this end, Alison continues to publish, present and provide practical workshops for other health professionals. Alison has published a number of papers in scientific journals, has contributed detailed information freely accessible via podcasts by PhysioEdge (itunes) and the British Journal of Sports Medicine (SoundCloud), and has recently contributed to 3 leading physiotherapy and sports medicine text books.

Alison continues a clinical load, working with patients with complex hip and lumbopelvic conditions, and across a broad spectrum of sports, including elite level triathlon, running, dance, cricket, athletics & swimming. She also spends a considerable amount of time mentoring her excellent staff, ensuring they are up-to-date and able to provide a high level of clinical expertise for management of musculoskeletal problems.
